LOGOTHERAPY
A counselling approach centred on meaning
Logotherapy was developed by Austrian psychiatrist and neurologist Viktor Frankl. It is grounded in the understanding that although we are shaped by our histories, relationships and circumstances, we are free in each moment to seek meaning and choose our attitude and actions.
The sources of meaning in logotherapeutic counselling are what Viktor Frankl called the creative, experiential and attitudinal values. These can be tapped into by clients to illuminate the meaning of the moment and lead to a lifestyle oriented to meaning. Logotherapy is compatible with other approaches, such as Acceptance and Commitment therapy, that share its orientation to human values.
This approach does not tell you what your purpose should be or ask you to find something positive in every difficulty. Instead, it helps you consider what can still be changed, what cannot presently be altered and what meaningful behaviours may be available to you.
My role is not to provide the answer. It is about listening carefully, asking thoughtful questions, and helping you recognise the values and possibilities for meaning within your own situation.
